Warbler Vista

June 14, 2012  |  Outdoors  |  Comments Off on Warbler Vista

The Balconies national wildlife refuge has only 2 trails, but both are very nice. Warbler Vista was known as the short trail, but they have built some extensions on in 4 directions.. the trail now makes about a 4 mile X. Seen here.. Popping out on the cactus rocks trail.

This outcropping was right where I saw the birds

The trail never climbs this peak but it does walk around the bottom

Cicada, These get together and make a wonderful buzzing that can get pretty loud

The Endangered Golden cheek Warbler

I got pretty lucky here, and even after a bit of a late start Hiking the Balconies canyon lands National wildlife preserve, I spotted the famously endangered Golden cheek warbler for which all of the 30,000 + acres are set aside for. I was on the Warbler Vista trail right outside Jonestown on this hike. I came across a momma and her baby..and snapped a shot of mom bringing back a little food. I wish the shots were crisper but I had the adrenaline pumping and it was tough to stay still. Awesome day to see this magnificent bird and be able to photograph it.

Down to the Confluence

Our Hike on Hamilton creek brought us down to the Confluence of Hamilton creek and the Pedernales River. Which was flowing rather nicely considering in some spots it looks very low… Along the way? Some Little friends and some great wildflowers…

After hanging around the swimming hole for a bit, Jen and I hiked down Hamilton creek to the Pedernales river. The creek is stunning, Lined with Ferns, Rocky out crops, in some cases forming a tunnel to walk through.. and Giant Cypress trees grew all along the banks as we walked.

There are small springs all around the swimming hole. Hamilton Creek is the main feed and it is also spring fed. All of the water flows from the huge underground river known as the edwards aquifer.. and the limestone filters it all!
