I was in Sacramento and Jen picked up a new member of the pack.. Everyone.. meet Chuck. He is a Corgi/Heeler mix and seems to be doing great… the rest of our crew are training him up for us and he has been a lot of fun!
On the Back side of Smith Oaks is a lake with a horseshoe shaped Island called heron Island. It was covered in Snowy Egrets and Roseate spoonbills raising their young.. its an annual event and one of the better rookeries in the area.
Nice view of the flower lined trail around the lagoon at Smith oaks. In this part of Texas you have to keep your eyes open.. as not only are there a ton of great birds, but you will likely stumble across a 14 foot Lizard..
At HIgh Island we ventured over to the much larger tract the Smith Oaks Sanctuary.. we experienced another fall out. There were so many different birds.. and all were moving very quickly as they fed frantically.
Hi Everyone.. sorry for the delay.. I am posting from a remote location.. so these are shots from before! I snapped these when I got my new 10 MM lens and we went out to the barn.. Ranger was looking good!
One of the premier birding locations in the US is high Island.. remote and at the end of the Bolivar peninsula its a long drive from anywhere. They have wonderful Habitat.. and the convergence of the central and eastern flyways..
Lafitte’s was wonderful… black and white warblers..Promothary’s..we also saw some great wood peckers..Super fun! but as the light faded we had to head out for some chips and salsa!
So After the Texas Birding classic.. Jen and I had the fever.. the migration was still on so after work on a Friday night we drove down to Galveston and went to Lafitte’s cove.. a small but bird friendly park on the island in a nice neighborhood.
The Texas Birding classic was amazing.. we wrapped it up with a drive back through central texas.. 177 species in 4 days and about 2500 miles of driving.. We came in 4th place overall.not to bad..
We moved North to Goose Island and were treated to one of the best events of the trip.. This Painted bunting pulled into a water feature as we happened to be there.. what a great event..One of my favorite birds.
